S-S40: the new compact lens from LUMIX

Panasonic expands its lens ecosystem with lenses designed for different types of creators.

In April, Panasonic introduced the new LUMIX S 40mm F2 (S-S40), a full-frame interchangeable lens compatible with the L-Mount system, designed to meet the needs of today's creatives who prioritize mobility, lightness, and agility. Weighing only 144 grams and measuring 40.9 millimeters in length, it was designed to fit into dynamic routines without weighing down your bag or being too heavy to use.

The 40mm focal length reinforces this proposition by finding a balance between 35mm and 50mm: close enough to create a connection with what is in focus, but wide enough to preserve the surrounding context. The result is images with more depth and naturalness, especially for street photography, portraiture, and landscapes.

The f/2 aperture plays a role in image construction, bringing separation between planes and a soft blur, with a natural bokeh, while maintaining sharpness in the highlighted area, even in more challenging lighting conditions, without the need to increase the ISO.

Even though it's compact, it's a lens designed for continuous use. Its resistance to dust and splashes is ideal for those who photograph on the go, change locations, or can't stop because of the environment. The fluorine coating on the front lens makes daily cleaning easier without interrupting the workflow. In addition, it shares a 62mm filter diameter with other models in the line, facilitating the use of accessories.

In the video, this behavior is maintained. The suppression of focus breathing and micro-step aperture control prevents perceptible variations in the image, keeping the framing stable, while the exposure adjusts smoothly, following the rhythm of the scene and contributing to a more cinematic aesthetic.

The launch of the 40mm f/2 also points to a broader movement. By sharing its lens roadmap, Panasonic reinforces the expansion of the L-Mount system with new lenses that follow this same direction, more compact, more versatile and more aligned with different ways of creating.
